Uneven Skin Tone?

Everyone wants flawless skin, but most people are plagued by an uneven skin tone or dark marks and spots. These marks are known as hyperpigmentation, caused by an over-production of melanin. Melanin is what gives skin and hair its color, and protects the skin from UV rays, but too much of it can cause that uneven skin tone that we could all do without.

Hyperpigmentation is caused by three factors: sun exposure, hormones, and inflammation.

1) Sun exposure: over-exposure to UV rays causes the body to produce extra melanin to protect the skin, resulting in dark spots.

2) Hormones: Increased hormone stimulation commonly occurs during pregnancy and on oral contraceptives,  and can cause Melasma – a hormone induced type of hyperpigmentation. Cosmetics and certain medications can also contribute.

3) Post-inflammation: Hyperpigmentation can also be the result of scarring, caused by injury or acne lesions. These are those red or dark spots that hang around long after acne is under control.
